Material - Faraday Rotator Glass (FRG)
Faraday Rotator Glass - it's a special
class of so called magneto-optical glasses which due to chemical
formula (В2О3, Li 2O, Ce2O3 and other doping) possess of pronounced
Faraday effect.
Faraday Rotation effect is that beam polarization turns round
when going through the transparent optical medium placed into
magnetic field. Be founded at 1846 it was only interesting
physical fact until practice at the end of XX century.
This means at first Faraday magneto-optical switches, also
modulators, circulators and other typical devices.
The main feature of Faraday rotation effect is optical nonreciprocity,
i.e beam reversibility principle disturbance. Experience establishes
that alternative beam direction (on the way back) gives the
same polarization angle turning as forward one. So far the
system of the magneto-optical medium element placed in crossed
polarizers transparent in forward direction will be "closed"
on the way back, so works as optical switch.
The angle of the Faraday rotation turning depends on the optical
medium micro parameters and the measure of these is Verdet
constant.
Thereby the magneto-optical glasses( Faraday Rotator Glasses
) have higher Verdet constant values in comparison with other
optical mediums.
Due to the Verdet constant rates the FRG can be separated
to several types: FRG04, FRG25, FRG32.
